In an article published on 9/11 in The Legal Intelligencer, Bianca Schmitt reflects on the start of her legal career at VF Law as a law student and discusses the value of working at a firm that encourages lawyers to fully immerse themselves in an industry and have an active voice to bridge the daunting gap between law school and the practice of law. Schmitt began her legal journey in the firm’s Creditor Rights Group and later discovered her passion for estate planning.
“I participated in strategy meetings, drafted motions, analyzed case law to support litigation decisions, and observed client consultations firsthand,” said Schmitt. “Being part of these immersive workplace interactions gave me early insight into the attorney’s role as both advocate and trusted advisor and helped me build the confidence to contribute meaningfully even as a law student.”
Being in the role was very advantageous for Schmitt as it forced her to “think like a lawyer” before she received the official title. Through meaningful engagements with her legal peers, she built up the confidence needed to contribute meaningfully to colleagues and clients.
Schmitt unravels more, explaining, “One of the most compelling parts of estate planning is the real-world impact. I have worked with families navigating complex multigenerational wealth transfers, single parents creating guardianship plans, and business owners ensuring succession without disruption. Each plan we craft is not just a set of documents; it reflects a client’s legacy.”
