HOAs Must React Strategically to Cyberbullies to Maintain Positive Homeowner Relationships

In an article published on December 12 in the Community Associations Institute Magazine, VF Law Partner Damien M. Bielli outlines strategic approaches HOAs should take to combat cyberbullying and maintain positive homeowner relationships. In today’s digital world, it has become a common occurrence for “keyboard warriors” to hurl insults. Bielli advises adopting a Civility Pledge and establishing clear communication protocols to reduce inappropriate behavior before it begins.

“Preemptive actions by an HOA can reduce this type of behavior before it ever begins. The Association should consider adopting a Civility Pledge,” Bielli notes. “A Civility Pledge is ‘A commitment to fostering a climate of open discussion and debate, mutual respect, and tolerance between all who live in, work in, and visit our community.'”

HOAs must respond strategically rather than emotionally. Bielli explains that boards should seek advice from trusted partners, respond carefully and respectfully to understand the source of frustration, and focus on de-escalating situations rather than fueling conflict with harsher words.

“While the Board may be frustrated, hurt, or angry over being the subject of cyberbullying, it is important that the Board members not only understand the public nature of their role for the HOA but also remain calm and clear-headed when addressing these issues. They must focus on de-escalating the situation rather than possibly fueling the fire by following the often instinctive response of firing back an equally insulting reply,” Bielli advises.
